Who was the radical journalist executed on March 24, 1794?
Answer
Jacques Hébert
Answer
Jacques Hébert
The radical journalist executed on 24 March 1794 was Jacques Hébert.
Hébert was the influential editor of Le Père Duchesne, a newspaper written in forceful language for a popular, sans-culotte audience. Through the paper and his political activity, he became the leading figure of the Hébertists, a radical faction that demanded aggressive action against enemies of the Revolution and economic measures benefiting ordinary people.
Hébert was initially associated with the Jacobins and later with the Cordeliers Club. In 1793 and early 1794, he increasingly attacked political figures he considered too moderate, including Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre. The revolutionary government eventually treated the Hébertists as a threat.
Hébert and his associates were arrested in March 1794, convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal, and guillotined on 24 March. Jean-Paul Marat was also a radical journalist, but he was assassinated by Charlotte Corday in July 1793 rather than executed by the government. Danton and Camille Desmoulins were executed in a separate purge on 5 April 1794.
