Who was the New Zealander in the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Edmund Hillary was the New Zealander in the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.

Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay reached Everest's summit on 29 May 1953. They were members of the ninth British expedition to the mountain, led by John Hunt. The pair used the South Col route and reached the 8,849-metre summit shortly before the expedition's deadline.

News of the achievement became public in Britain on 2 June 1953, the day of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Hillary was knighted later that year, while Norgay received the George Medal.

George Mallory disappeared on Everest in 1924, and evidence cannot prove whether he reached the summit. Reinhold Messner later became the first person to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen. Those achievements are separate from the first confirmed ascent.
