Who was the new producer hired for Metallica’s 1991 album, The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock was the new producer hired for Metallica’s 1991 album, The Black Album.

Metallica had been impressed by Rock’s production work on Mötley Crüe’s Dr. Feelgood, released in 1989. Although the band initially hesitated about working with him, they ultimately brought him in to help shape their next record.

Rock encouraged the musicians to record more collaboratively and pushed for a stronger live feel. He also suggested harmonic vocals for James Hetfield and helped bring Jason Newsted’s bass into a more audible role after its near-inaudibility on ...And Justice for All. These production choices contributed to the album’s broad, polished sound.

The sessions were not easy. Rock and the band frequently argued over performances, lyrics, and the recording process, and the producer later described the experience as highly stressful. Metallica nevertheless credited the collaboration with helping create the record’s focused sound. Rock continued producing several later Metallica albums, including Load, Reload, and St. Anger, although his role and the band’s working methods changed over time.
