Joe Montana was the MVP of Super Bowl XXIV between the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos.
Played on January 28, 1990, in New Orleans, the game ended in a 55–10 victory for San Francisco—the largest margin in Super Bowl history at the time. Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and a Super Bowl-record five touchdown passes, leading the 49ers to their second consecutive championship.
Montana’s receivers included Jerry Rice, who caught three touchdown passes, and John Taylor, who added another. The performance earned Montana his third Super Bowl MVP award, following victories in Super Bowls XVI and XIX. He remains the only player to win the award three times.
A common mix-up is confusing Super Bowl XXIV with Super Bowl XXIII, San Francisco’s previous championship. Montana was the quarterback and MVP in XXIV, while wide receiver Jerry Rice won MVP in XXIII. The Broncos’ quarterback, John Elway, was the losing finalist in XXIV.
