Who was the lead architect of Windows NT?

Dave Cutler was the lead architect of Windows NT, the operating system family Microsoft began developing in the late 1980s. He was recruited from Digital Equipment Corporation, where he had been a major systems-software designer.

Cutler brought experience from projects including RSX-11M and VMS, and that background influenced NT’s design. Windows NT was built as a portable, secure, multitasking operating system rather than as a direct continuation of the older MS-DOS and Windows 9x codebases.

The first NT release, Windows NT 3.1, shipped in 1993. Its architecture later became the foundation for consumer Windows: Windows XP unified the NT and Windows 9x lines in 2001, and modern versions of Windows still descend from that family.

A common mix-up is crediting Bill Gates, Paul Allen, or Steve Ballmer because they were Microsoft founders or senior executives. They shaped Microsoft’s strategy, but Cutler led the engineering architecture of Windows NT.
