Who was the last British man to win Wimbledon before Andy Murray?

The story behind the answer

Fred Perry was the last British man to win Wimbledon before Andy Murray. Perry won the gentlemen’s singles title three consecutive times, in 1934, 1935 and 1936, establishing him as the defining British men’s champion of the pre-war era.

Perry’s 1936 victory came against Germany’s Gottfried von Cramm, whom he defeated 6–1, 6–1, 6–0. Andy Murray ended the 77-year wait in 2013 by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. Murray had already become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon singles final since Henry “Bunny” Austin in 1938 when he was runner-up in 2012.

A common mix-up is to name Murray’s fellow British players Roger Taylor, Greg Rusedski or Tim Henman. All had notable Wimbledon careers, but none won the men’s singles title. Perry also won major titles at the Australian, French and U.S. Championships and became the first man to complete a career Grand Slam.
