Who was the Girondin leader executed on October 31, 1793?
Answer
Jacques Pierre Brissot
Answer
Jacques Pierre Brissot
The Girondin leader executed on 31 October 1793 was Jacques Pierre Brissot.
Also known as Brissot de Warville, Brissot was a journalist, abolitionist, and prominent revolutionary politician. He served in the Legislative Assembly and later represented Eure-et-Loir in the National Convention. His followers became known as Brissotins before the broader Girondin faction took its name.
Brissot generally supported a republican Revolution but clashed with the more radical Montagnards, including Maximilien Robespierre. He advocated revolutionary war against Europe’s monarchies, believing conflict could expose counter-revolutionary enemies and strengthen the new republic. His political influence declined during the growing struggle between Girondins and Montagnards.
The Convention ordered Brissot’s arrest in October 1793. On 30 October, he and fellow Girondin deputies were condemned. The next day, 31 October, Brissot was guillotined in Paris with 21 other Girondins. The Girondins’ defeat marked a major step in the rise of the Montagnards and the increasingly radical phase of the Revolution.
Madame Roland was closely associated with the Girondins but was not the leader named in this question.
