Who was the French artist that co-founded Cubism with Picasso?

The story behind the answer

Who was the French artist that co-founded Cubism with Picasso? Georges Braque was Picasso’s fellow pioneer of Cubism.

Braque and Picasso began working closely together in Paris around 1909, building on experiments with fractured forms, reduced color, and multiple viewpoints. Their paintings from this period are often so similar that distinguishing one artist’s work from the other can be difficult.

The movement developed from earlier influences, especially Paul Cézanne’s geometric treatment of nature, but Cézanne did not co-found Cubism. Henri Matisse helped popularize the term through a remark about Braque’s “little cubes,” while Juan Gris became an important later Cubist—not the original partner of Picasso.

Their collaboration continued until the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Braque later helped develop Synthetic Cubism and pioneered papier collé, a form of collage using pasted paper. Picasso and Braque are therefore conventionally named as Cubism’s founding duo, even though many other artists soon shaped the movement.
