Who was the first Russian woman to win Wimbledon?
Answer
Maria Sharapova
Answer
Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova was the first Russian woman to win Wimbledon, claiming the 2004 ladies’ singles title.
Sharapova was only 17 when she defeated defending champion Serena Williams 6–1, 6–4 in the final. The victory was her first Grand Slam singles championship and made her one of the youngest Wimbledon champions in the Open Era. Her powerful groundstrokes and fearless play on Centre Court turned the final into a major breakthrough.
The result is sometimes mixed up with other Russian stars who won major titles around the same period. Anastasia Myskina won the 2004 French Open earlier that year, becoming the first Russian woman to win a major singles title, but Sharapova was the first Russian woman to win Wimbledon. Sharapova later completed a career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.
