Who was the first professional skateboarder to have a Vans signature shoe?

Steve Caballero was the first professional skateboarder to receive a Vans signature shoe. The Caballero model was introduced in 1988, establishing a long-running pattern of Vans developing shoes around individual professional skaters.

Caballero was already a major figure in vertical and street skating when Vans created the shoe. He was known for pioneering tricks such as the Caballerial, a fakie 360 aerial, and his influence helped make the signature model meaningful both technically and culturally. The original high-top Caballero was later followed by the Half Cab, a mid-top design that became one of Vans’ best-known skate shoes.
