Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the Moon during Apollo 11.

Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface on 20 July 1969, after the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility. He was followed by Buzz Aldrin, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia.

Armstrong and Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples, photographing the surface, and deploying scientific instruments. Apollo 11 returned safely to Earth on 24 July 1969, achieving the United States goal announced by President John F. Kennedy earlier in the decade.

Armstrong had previously been a naval aviator and test pilot. He later taught aerospace engineering and generally avoided celebrity. The mission’s “first human” record belongs to Armstrong; Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon.
