Who was the first human to step onto the Moon during Apollo 11?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong was the first human to step onto the Moon during Apollo 11.

Armstrong descended from the lunar module Eagle and placed his left foot on the lunar surface at 02:56 UTC on 21 July 1969. He was followed by Buzz Aldrin about 19 minutes later. Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia and did not walk on the Moon.

Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16 July 1969. Armstrong and Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples, taking photographs, and deploying scientific instruments. The crew returned safely to Earth on 24 July.

Armstrong’s first step is sometimes confused with the first human-made object to reach the Moon, which occurred earlier through uncrewed missions. Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space, not the first person on the Moon.
