Who was the first European-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy?

Nicklas Lidstrom was the first European-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He received the award in 2002 after leading the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup.

Lidstrom produced 16 points in the 2002 playoffs, including five goals and 11 assists, and was especially influential in the Final against the Carolina Hurricanes. Detroit won the series in five games, giving Lidstrom his third Stanley Cup and making him the first European-born and trained player to be named playoff MVP.

The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup playoffs, not necessarily the player with the most points. The award was introduced in 1965, and Montreal Canadiens captain Jean Beliveau was its first winner.
