Who was the first artist to win Video of the Year twice at the VMAs?

The story behind the answer

Eminem was the first artist to win the MTV VMA for Video of the Year twice. He won in 2000 for The Real Slim Shady and again in 2002 for Without Me.

The two victories came during Eminem’s early-2000s peak, when his provocative, highly stylized videos were central to his mainstream success. The Real Slim Shady won at the 2000 ceremony, while Without Me took the prize at the 2002 ceremony and also collected several additional awards, including Best Male Video, Best Rap Video, and Best Direction.

This fact is often confused with later records. Taylor Swift eventually became the first artist to win Video of the Year in consecutive years and later extended that streak to three straight wins. Beyoncé, Madonna, and Rihanna have also been major VMA winners, but none was the first artist to reach two Video of the Year victories. The award itself is the VMAs’ top competitive honor and traditionally closes the ceremony.
