Who was the first art dealer to exhibit Picasso in Paris?
Answer
Ambroise Vollard
Answer
Ambroise Vollard
Ambroise Vollard was the first art dealer to give Picasso an exhibition in Paris. In June 1901, Vollard presented a show of Picasso’s work at his influential gallery at 6 rue Laffitte, helping introduce the 19-year-old Spanish artist to the Parisian art world.
The exhibition included dozens of paintings and came shortly after Picasso’s first visit to Paris. It was an important early step in his career, even though his work and style would change dramatically later that year as he moved toward the melancholy imagery associated with the Blue Period.
Berthe Weill is a common source of confusion. She was among Picasso’s earliest supporters and sold or exhibited his work in Paris, but Vollard is generally credited with organizing Picasso’s first Paris exhibition. Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler became crucial to Picasso’s later Cubist career, while Paul Rosenberg represented him much later.
