Who was the chief engineer credited with developing Japan’s original Shinkansen?

The story behind the answer

Hideo Shima was the chief engineer credited with developing Japan’s original Shinkansen.

Shima served as the technical leader behind the Tokaido Shinkansen, which began service in 1964. He worked closely with railway president Shinji Sogō, who provided strong administrative and political support for the project. Together, they helped turn a risky postwar proposal into the world’s first purpose-built high-speed railway.

Shima’s engineering choices included dedicated passenger tracks, continuous welded rail, electric multiple-unit trains, and a broad-gauge alignment. These features allowed frequent, fast services without relying on locomotive-hauled trains. The first Shinkansen trains connected Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.

A common mix-up is to credit Sogō as the engineer. Sogō was central to the project’s leadership, but Hideo Shima is the figure most specifically associated with its technical design and engineering development.
