Who was the chief designer of the Mercedes-Benz 190E (W201)?

The story behind the answer

Bruno Sacco was the chief designer associated with the Mercedes-Benz 190E (W201).

Sacco led Mercedes-Benz styling during the development and launch of the W201, the compact executive sedan marketed as the Mercedes-Benz 190. The car debuted at the 1982 Paris Motor Show and gave Mercedes a smaller rear-wheel-drive model positioned below the larger W123 and S-Class lines. Its restrained, aerodynamic shape became one of the defining Mercedes designs of the 1980s.

The W201 was a team project, so specialist designers also contributed to its engineering and exterior work. Peter Pfeiffer is sometimes mentioned because he was involved in the W201 design program, but the chief-design leadership and the design’s association with Mercedes styling were centered on Sacco. That distinction explains why Bruno Sacco is the canonical answer to this wording.

Sacco headed Mercedes-Benz styling from 1975 to 1999 and oversaw other landmark models, including the W126 S-Class, W124 E-Class and R129 SL. The 190 was reportedly one of his favorite designs because it expanded Mercedes’ identity into a new, more compact class.
