Who was the captain of the "Pinta" on Christopher Columbus' voyage in 1492?

The captain of the Pinta on Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage was Martín Alonso Pinzón. He was an experienced Spanish mariner from Palos de la Frontera and the eldest of the Pinzón brothers, a family well known among the region's sailors.

Pinzón played a major role in making the expedition possible. He helped recruit skilled crew members, contributed money, and sailed as captain of the Pinta, while Columbus commanded the Santa María and Vicente Yáñez Pinzón commanded the Niña. His brother Francisco Martín Pinzón served as the Pinta's master, or senior officer after the captain.

The Pinta was the fastest of the three ships and was separated from the rest of the fleet more than once. Rodrigo de Triana reportedly saw land from the Pinta on October 12, 1492. A common mix-up is to name Columbus as captain of every vessel; he led the expedition but personally commanded the Santa María. Martín Alonso Pinzón died soon after the voyage, around March 1493.
