Who was Steve Young's go to guy on the 49ers?

The story behind the answer

Steve Young’s go-to guy on the San Francisco 49ers was Jerry Rice. The Hall of Fame quarterback and wide receiver formed one of the NFL’s most productive passing partnerships during the 1990s.

Rice joined the 49ers in 1985, while Young became the team’s primary quarterback after Joe Montana’s departure following the 1992 season. Young repeatedly looked for Rice on crucial downs, deep routes, and in the end zone. Their connection helped San Francisco win Super Bowl XXIX after the 1994 season, when Young threw a record six touchdown passes; Rice caught three of them.

Rice had also been Montana’s favorite target, so a common mix-up is to associate him only with Montana. In reality, Rice remained Young’s premier receiving option and continued producing at an extraordinary level. Other notable 49ers receivers included John Taylor and, later, Terrell Owens, but Jerry Rice is the clear canonical answer to this trivia question.
