Gerrit Dou was Rembrandt’s first known pupil.

Dou studied with Rembrandt in Leiden from about 1628, when Dou was a young artist and Rembrandt was still establishing his own reputation. The training helped Dou develop the precise brushwork, dramatic lighting, and close observation associated with Rembrandt’s early manner.

Dou later became the founder of the Leiden fijnschilder tradition, whose artists prized exceptionally smooth surfaces and meticulous detail. His small-scale paintings were highly valued by collectors, and his style became distinct from Rembrandt’s broader, more visibly worked handling of paint.

Other artists, including Ferdinand Bol, Carel Fabritius, and Samuel van Hoogstraten, are also linked to Rembrandt’s workshop or circle. Their later careers can make them seem like obvious candidates, but Gerrit Dou is generally identified as Rembrandt’s first pupil.
