Who was Pokémon’s primary character designer and art director?

The story behind the answer

Ken Sugimori was Pokémon’s primary character designer and art director.

Sugimori met Satoshi Tajiri through the Game Freak fanzine and became its illustrator. When Game Freak developed Pokémon, Sugimori helped turn Tajiri’s concept into a visual world of distinct creatures, trainers, environments, and promotional artwork.

He drew and finalized most of the original 151 Pokémon, working alongside artists including Atsuko Nishida, Motofumi Fujiwara, Shigeki Morimoto, and Satoshi Ota. This means he was not the sole designer of every early species, but he was the principal art figure responsible for the franchise’s original visual identity.

Sugimori continued contributing to Pokémon games, films, trading cards, and later generations. His role is sometimes confused with Tajiri’s creator credit or Nishida’s individual design credit for Pikachu. The most accurate broad answer for the franchise’s primary character designer and art director is Ken Sugimori.
