Who was Pandora’s husband in the Greek myth of Pandora’s jar?

The story behind the answer

Epimetheus was Pandora’s husband in the Greek myth of Pandora’s jar.

Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus, whose name suggests forethought. When Pandora was sent to humanity, Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept any gift from Zeus. Epimetheus nevertheless accepted Pandora and married her.

The contrast between the brothers is central to the story. Prometheus is portrayed as cautious and forward-thinking, while Epimetheus acts first and understands the consequences afterward. In Hesiod’s account, Pandora opens the container in the household, releasing the troubles that had previously been kept away from human life.

Later retellings often describe Pandora as Epimetheus’s wife without emphasizing their contrasting names. Pandora is also sometimes incorrectly paired with Prometheus because both figures belong to the same myth cycle. In the classical story, however, Prometheus is her brother-in-law, not her husband.
