Who was named the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year?
Answer
Jacob DeGrom
Answer
Jacob DeGrom
Jacob deGrom was named the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year.
The New York Mets right-hander made his major-league debut on May 15, 2014, and quickly became one of the National League’s most effective young pitchers. He finished the season with a 9–6 record, a 2.69 earned-run average, and 144 strikeouts in 22 starts.
DeGrom received the award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, winning a close vote over Cincinnati Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton. He also earned National League Rookie of the Month honors in July and September, helping establish him as the Mets’ first Rookie of the Year since 1984.
A common mix-up is confusing the National League winner with the American League winner from the same season: José Abreu of the Chicago White Sox won the 2014 American League Rookie of the Year Award. DeGrom later became a two-time National League Cy Young Award winner, taking that honor in 2018 and 2019.
