Derek Jeter was the Most Valuable Player of the 2000 World Series between the New York Yankees and New York Mets.
Jeter helped the Yankees win the Subway Series in five games, giving New York its third consecutive World Series championship and its 26th overall. He batted .409 during the Series, collected nine hits, scored five runs, and hit two home runs. His performance earned him the World Series MVP award, adding another major honor to a season in which he had already been named MVP of the All-Star Game.
The 2000 championship was the first World Series played between two New York City teams since the 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers–New York Yankees Series. The matchup was nicknamed the Subway Series because fans could travel between the teams’ stadiums using New York’s subway system. A frequent mix-up is confusing Jeter’s award with the 2000 American League MVP award, which went to Jason Giambi. Jeter was the World Series MVP, while teammate Mariano Rivera was named World Series MVP in 1999.
