Who was Maximilian’s wife during the French-backed Second Mexican Empire?
Answer
Carlota of Mexico
Answer
Carlota of Mexico
Carlota of Mexico was Maximilian’s wife during the French-backed Second Mexican Empire.
Born Charlotte of Belgium, she married Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria in 1857. When French interventionists established a monarchy in Mexico, the couple accepted the offer of the Mexican crown. She became empress consort and adopted the name Carlota in Mexico.
Carlota supported the imperial project and acted as a political advocate for the new regime. In 1866, as France prepared to withdraw its troops, she traveled to Europe to seek continued support from Napoleon III and Pope Pius IX. Her efforts failed, and she later suffered severe mental illness.
Maximilian remained in Mexico, was captured by republican forces, and was executed in 1867. Carlota outlived him by decades but never returned to public political life. Her story belongs to the later empire that followed the Puebla victory celebrated on Cinco de Mayo.
