Answer
Jacob W. Davis
Answer
Jacob W. Davis
Jacob W. Davis was Levi Strauss’s tailor partner in the 1873 riveted-trousers patent.
Davis was a tailor in Reno, Nevada, who developed the idea of reinforcing stress points on work trousers with copper rivets. A customer had requested especially durable pants, and Davis recognized that rivets could strengthen areas such as pocket corners and the base of the button fly.
Davis wrote to Levi Strauss, whose San Francisco dry-goods business supplied the fabric. Strauss agreed to support the patent application, and the two men received U.S. Patent No. 139,121 on May 20, 1873. The invention became a foundation of modern blue jeans.
The trousers were not originally designed as fashion garments. They were durable workwear for laborers, miners, and other customers who needed clothing that could withstand heavy use. Davis later joined the business in San Francisco.
