Who was known as "Mr. Cub"?

Ernie Banks was known as “Mr. Cub.” The nickname reflected his extraordinary connection with the Chicago Cubs, for whom he played his entire 19-season Major League Baseball career.

Banks joined the Cubs in 1953 and became the first African American player in franchise history. Primarily a shortstop early in his career, he later moved to first base and became one of baseball’s most powerful hitters at either position.

He finished with 512 home runs, 2,583 hits, and 1,636 runs batted in. Banks was a 14-time All-Star, won two National League MVP Awards, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. His cheerful personality and famous enthusiasm for playing doubleheaders made him beloved in Chicago.
