Who was Hemingway's fourth and final wife?

Hemingway's fourth and final wife was Mary Welsh. An American journalist and author, Welsh met Hemingway in London in 1944 while both were involved in wartime journalism. She was then married to Australian journalist Noel Monks, while Hemingway was still married to Martha Gellhorn.

Welsh and Hemingway married in Cuba in March 1946, after her divorce from Monks. Their marriage lasted until Hemingway's death in 1961, making Mary both his fourth wife and his widow. She later wrote the memoir How It Was, published in 1976, and helped preserve aspects of Hemingway's literary legacy.

The common mix-up is with Hemingway's other wives. Hadley Richardson was his first wife, Pauline Pfeiffer was his second, and Martha Gellhorn was his third. Mary Welsh therefore completes the sequence of Hemingway's four marriages. She died in 1986 and was buried beside Hemingway in Ketchum, Idaho.
