Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and pioneering photography gallerist?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and pioneering photography gallerist.
O'Keeffe and Stieglitz married in New York in 1924. Stieglitz was already an influential photographer, publisher, and promoter of modern art. He exhibited O'Keeffe's work at his galleries and helped introduce her paintings and drawings to a wider American audience.
Their relationship was both personal and artistic, although O'Keeffe maintained her own career and increasingly sought independence from New York’s art world. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of images of her between 1917 and the 1930s.
A common mix-up is identifying Stieglitz only as a photographer. He also ran important galleries, including 291, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. O'Keeffe remained married to him until his death in 1946, after which she spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico.
