Who was Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband and longtime photographer?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband and longtime photographer.

Stieglitz, a leading American photographer and gallery owner, first exhibited O’Keeffe’s drawings at his New York gallery in 1916. Their professional relationship became personal, and they married in 1924.

He photographed O’Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and nudes over several decades. Those photographs helped shape her public image, although O’Keeffe later objected to the way some viewers treated her work primarily as an extension of Stieglitz’s photographs.

Stieglitz also promoted modern art through galleries including 291, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. He died in 1946, after which O’Keeffe moved increasingly toward her New Mexico life. Their relationship is central to both artists’ biographies but does not mean Stieglitz created O’Keeffe’s artistic style.
