Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a pioneering photographer?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and pioneering photographer was Alfred Stieglitz.

Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's drawings through a friend and exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916. He began photographing her in 1917, producing hundreds of portraits and studies over the following years.

They married in 1924. Stieglitz was nearly 24 years older than O'Keeffe and was already a major figure in American photography and modern art when their relationship began.

Their marriage connected O'Keeffe with New York's artistic circles, but she increasingly sought independence from Stieglitz's promotion and interpretation of her work. They spent time apart, especially after O'Keeffe established a stronger connection with New Mexico. Stieglitz died in 1946, while O'Keeffe lived until 1986.
