Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a leading photographer of modernist portraits?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a leading photographer of modernist portraits.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's drawings through the photographer and gallerist Anita Pollitzer, who showed them to him in 1916. He exhibited her work at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916 and 1917.
Their relationship became personal, and Stieglitz began photographing O'Keeffe extensively. The photographs helped shape public attention around her, although O'Keeffe also established an independent artistic reputation through painting and teaching.
They married in 1924 and remained together until Stieglitz died in 1946. Stieglitz was 23 years older than O'Keeffe and played an important role in introducing European modernism to American audiences.
