Forbes estimated Clooney’s pretax earnings at $239 million, the largest annual total ever reported for an actor at that point. The unusually high figure was driven largely by the sale of his Casamigos tequila company, which he co-founded with Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman.

Clooney’s result illustrates why Forbes’ highest-paid rankings include business income as well as acting salaries. His film work, including Ocean’s 8 and television and production projects, contributed to his profile, but the Casamigos transaction made the year exceptional.

The ranking measured earnings over a 12-month period. It did not mean Clooney had the highest lifetime acting income or the largest overall net worth among actors.
