Who was Faraday's bookbinder and bookseller master in Blandford Street?
Answer
George Riebau
Answer
George Riebau
George Riebau was Michael Faraday’s bookbinder and bookseller master in Blandford Street.
Faraday began his seven-year apprenticeship with Riebau in 1805, when Faraday was fourteen. The work gave him unusual access to books, which he read avidly while learning the bookbinding trade. Riebau reportedly allowed his apprentice to examine scientific books and copy interesting illustrations and diagrams.
That access helped connect Faraday’s practical craft training with his developing interest in science. Riebau also helped him obtain tickets to lectures by Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution. Faraday later sent Davy an extensive set of lecture notes, an act that helped launch his scientific career and eventually brought him to the Royal Institution.
The names in the wrong options are linked to other parts of Faraday’s early life. Benjamin Abbott was a close correspondent, William Dance helped provide lecture tickets, and John Tatum founded the City Philosophical Society. None was Faraday’s Blandford Street master.
