Pauline Marie Pfeiffer was an American journalist who worked for Vanity Fair and Vogue before meeting Hemingway in Paris. She became acquainted with Ernest and his first wife, Hadley Richardson, in 1926. Pauline and Hemingway began an affair, and Hemingway’s marriage to Hadley ended in divorce in January 1927.

Hemingway married Pauline in May 1927. They moved from Europe to the United States and eventually made Key West their home. Pauline’s family was wealthy and Catholic, and Hemingway converted to Catholicism before their marriage. They had two sons, Patrick and Gregory; Gregory later lived as Gloria Hemingway.

Pauline is sometimes mixed up with Hemingway’s later wives: Martha Gellhorn was his third wife, and Mary Welsh was his fourth.
