Who was elected the first mayor of Paris immediately after the storming of the Bastille? Jean Sylvain Bailly was elected the first mayor of Paris.

Bailly took office on 15 July 1789, the day after the Bastille fell, as Paris established a new municipal government known as the Commune of Paris. Before becoming mayor, he was a prominent astronomer and mathematician, a deputy of the Third Estate, and the first president of the National Assembly.

He was also closely associated with the Tennis Court Oath of 20 June 1789. As president of the assembly, Bailly stood at the center of the movement demanding political reform and a constitution. His election reflected the attempt to give revolutionary Paris an orderly civic administration after days of unrest.

Bailly served as mayor until November 1791. He supported a constitutional monarchy and worked with the Marquis de Lafayette, who commanded the newly formed National Guard. That moderate position later made him unpopular with more radical revolutionaries; he was executed by guillotine in 1793 during the Reign of Terror.
