Who was elected President of the United States in November 2016?

The story behind the answer

Donald Trump was elected President of the United States in the November 2016 presidential election.

The election was held on 8 November 2016. Trump, the Republican nominee and a businessman and television personality, defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, a former U.S. secretary of state and senator. His running mate was Indiana governor Mike Pence; Clinton’s running mate was Virginia senator Tim Kaine.

Trump won the Electoral College, receiving 304 electoral votes after the official electoral count, while Clinton received 227. He did not win the national popular vote: Clinton received roughly 2.87 million more votes nationwide. Under the U.S. system, however, the presidency is decided through state-based Electoral College votes rather than by the national popular vote alone.

The result was widely regarded as a major political upset because Clinton had led most national polls and many forecasts. Trump carried several closely contested Rust Belt states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He became the first U.S. president without previous military or elected-government service.
