Who was Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo's backup in 2012?

The story behind the answer

Tony Romo’s backup with the Dallas Cowboys in 2012 was Kyle Orton.

The Cowboys signed Orton to a three-year contract in March 2012 after their previous backup, Jon Kitna, retired following the 2011 season. Orton had extensive NFL experience, including starting stretches with the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and other teams, making him a highly regarded No. 2 quarterback behind Romo.

Romo started all 16 games for Dallas in 2012, finishing with 4,903 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes as the Cowboys went 8–8. Orton appeared briefly, completing 1 of 2 passes for 10 yards. Although Stephen McGee was also on the roster, Orton was the designated primary backup and the answer expected by a fair quizmaster.

A common mix-up is Jon Kitna, who had been Romo’s backup in earlier seasons. Kitna retired before the 2012 campaign, and Orton replaced him on the depth chart.
