Fear is one of the five emotions working inside Riley’s Headquarters, alongside Joy, Sadness, Anger, and Disgust. His job is to watch for danger, evaluate risks, and keep Riley from making choices that might hurt or embarrass her.

Hader’s performance gives Fear a nervous, high-energy personality. The character is constantly scanning for possible disasters, from everyday accidents to social situations Riley may find threatening. This makes him comic, but his role also reflects the film’s larger idea that every emotion has a useful purpose.

The voice cast is easy to mix up because several performers became strongly associated with their characters. Amy Poehler voices Joy, Phyllis Smith voices Sadness, Mindy Kaling voices Disgust, and Lewis Black voices Anger. Hader later returned as Fear in Inside Out 2, while the sequel added new emotions including Anxiety and Envy.
