Eddie Murphy voiced the dragon Mushu in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.

Mushu is a small red dragon who was once a guardian spirit of Mulan’s Fa family. After failing in his duties, he is demoted to lighting incense and striking a gong for the ancestors. When Mulan leaves home to protect her father, Mushu sees a chance to restore his status and secretly becomes her guide.

Murphy’s energetic comic delivery shaped Mushu into one of the film’s most recognizable characters. The filmmakers had sought a major comedic performer partly because Robin Williams’ Genie had become a defining presence in Aladdin.
