Who voiced the character Tamatoa?
Answer
Jemaine Clement
Answer
Jemaine Clement
Jemaine Clement voiced Tamatoa in Disney’s 2016 animated film Moana.
Tamatoa is a giant coconut crab who lives in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters. He is a treasure-hoarder and a self-important villain who keeps Maui’s magical fishhook among his prized possessions. Moana and Maui encounter him while trying to recover the hook.
Clement’s performance gives Tamatoa a flamboyant, theatrical personality, especially in the musical number “Shiny.” The song was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and reflects Tamatoa’s obsession with glitter, status, and appearance. Clement also brought musical and comic experience from his work with the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords.
A common mix-up is confusing Tamatoa’s voice with Taika Waititi, who was involved in Moana’s early development and voiced a temporary version of Maui in an early presentation. Clement also reprised Tamatoa in the Māori-language dub.
