Who voiced the character of Shaggy in the original series?
Answer
Casey Kasem
Answer
Casey Kasem
Casey Kasem voiced Shaggy in the original series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!. His performance established the character’s distinctive nervous, hungry, slang-filled personality.
Kasem was assigned Shaggy rather than Fred Jones, a role he had hoped to play. Frank Welker instead became the voice of Fred. To shape Shaggy’s sound, Kasem drew inspiration from Walter Denton, Dick Crenna’s character in Our Miss Brooks, while also adapting the role to Shaggy’s beatnik and hippie-influenced design.
The original series premiered on CBS in 1969, and Kasem voiced Shaggy throughout its 25-episode run. He continued in the role across many later Scooby-Doo productions, making his interpretation the benchmark for the character. A common mix-up is confusing Kasem with Frank Welker, who voiced Fred in the original show and later became Scooby-Doo’s long-running voice.
