Who voiced Sina, Moana's mother?

The story behind the answer

Nicole Scherzinger voiced Sina, Moana’s mother, in Disney’s 2016 animated film Moana.

Sina is Tui’s wife, Moana’s mother, and the chieftess of Motunui. She supports Moana while also understanding why Tui wants to protect their daughter from the dangers beyond the reef. Sina’s role helps anchor the family’s debate over tradition, safety, and Moana’s calling as a wayfinder.

Scherzinger was already widely known as a singer, songwriter, and performer, including her work as lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Her musical background suited Moana’s song-driven storytelling, although Sina has a smaller singing role than characters such as Moana, Maui, and Tamatoa.

Viewers sometimes confuse Sina’s voice with Rachel House, who voices Tala, Moana’s grandmother. They are both important female members of Moana’s family, but their characters serve different purposes: Sina is Moana’s mother, while Tala is her grandmother and spiritual mentor. Scherzinger also reprised Sina in the Hawaiian-language dub.
