Who voiced Scrappy-Doo in his first appearance?

The story behind the answer

Lennie Weinrib voiced Scrappy-Doo in the character’s first appearance.

Scrappy-Doo debuted in 1979 in the animated series “Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo.” Weinrib supplied the original voice for Scrappy during the character’s first season, giving the puppy his distinctive energetic personality and recurring “Puppy Power” attitude. Scrappy is presented as Scooby-Doo’s bold nephew, contrasting with his uncle’s usual fearfulness.

The character was created when Scooby-Doo’s ratings were weakening and ABC was considering whether the franchise should continue. Scrappy’s smaller size, aggressive confidence, and willingness to confront monsters were intended to refresh the format. His introduction changed the series substantially, with later episodes often focusing on Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy in shorter adventures.

Don Messick, who voiced Scooby-Doo, took over Scrappy’s voice from 1980 onward and became the performer most associated with the character over the following years. That later casting creates the most common mix-up. Casey Kasem voiced Shaggy, Frank Welker voiced Fred and later other franchise characters, and Don Messick voiced Scooby; none of them originated Scrappy’s voice.

Weinrib later became known for roles including H.R. Pufnstuf and various animated characters.
