Who voiced Chief Tui, Moana's father?

Temuera Morrison voiced Chief Tui, Moana’s father, in Disney’s 2016 animated film Moana.

Tui is the chief of Motunui and the husband of Sina. He is protective of Moana and strongly opposes her fascination with the open ocean because he fears she will suffer the same fate as the sailors who disappeared beyond the reef. His caution creates one of the film’s central family conflicts.

Morrison is a New Zealand actor of Māori descent known internationally for roles in Once Were Warriors, Star Wars, and Aquaman. His connection to Māori and wider Polynesian representation was especially meaningful in a film shaped by research across the Pacific. Christopher Jackson provided Tui’s singing voice in the English version.

The character is sometimes confused with Maui, the demigod voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Tui is not a supernatural hero; he is Moana’s human father and the leader of her island community. Morrison also reprised the role for the Māori-language version of Moana.
