Oliver Kahn turned down an offer to become manager of FC Schalke 04 in 2009. The approach came shortly after the former Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper had ended his playing career and as Schalke searched for new sporting leadership.

Schalke’s manager Andreas Müller was dismissed in March 2009, creating an urgent vacancy. Club officials considered Kahn for a team-manager or sporting-management role, but he declined the offer. Reports at the time said the timing was too early for him to commit fully to such a demanding position.

The wording can cause a small football-language mix-up: this was primarily a team-manager or sporting-director-style job, not necessarily the head-coach role on the touchline. Schalke’s coaching duties were handled on an interim basis by Mike Büskens, Youri Mulder and Oliver Reck after Fred Rutten’s departure. Later in 2009, Felix Magath took charge as both head coach and general manager.

Kahn eventually returned to football administration elsewhere. He became a prominent executive at Bayern Munich, serving as the club’s chief executive from 2021 until 2023.
