Who took the famous V-J Day in Times Square photograph on August 14, 1945?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Eisenstaedt took the famous V-J Day in Times Square photograph on August 14, 1945.

The image shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman in a white uniform during celebrations in New York City. Eisenstaedt was working as a photojournalist for Life magazine and photographed the rapidly changing crowd with a Leica IIIa camera. He later said he took four frames of the moment.

The picture became an enduring symbol of the celebrations that followed news of Japan's surrender. However, the identities and circumstances of the people in the image were debated for decades, and the image is not the same photograph as Victor Jorgensen's separately published Navy picture of a similar moment. The photograph first appeared in Life magazine about a week after the event.
