Answer
Alfred Eisenstaedt
Answer
Alfred Eisenstaedt
Alfred Eisenstaedt took the famous Times Square photograph of a sailor kissing a woman on V-J Day.
Eisenstaedt photographed the moment in New York City's Times Square on 14 August 1945, as crowds gathered after news of Japan's surrender reached the United States. Life magazine published the image the following week, helping make it one of the best-known photographs associated with the end of World War II.
The photograph is often called V-J Day in Times Square or simply The Kiss. The sailor grabbed a woman dressed in white and kissed her during the spontaneous celebration. A separate, very similar image was taken by Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen, which is why the two photographers are sometimes confused.
The woman in Eisenstaedt's image was later identified as Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant, not a nurse. The sailor's identity has remained disputed, with several men claiming to be him.
