Who took the famous photograph V-J Day in Times Square during the 1945 surrender celebrations?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Eisenstaedt took the famous photograph V-J Day in Times Square during the 1945 celebrations of Japan’s surrender. The image shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman in a white uniform in New York City.

Eisenstaedt photographed the moment on August 14, 1945, as people gathered in anticipation of the announcement that Japan had accepted the Allied terms. Life magazine published the image a week later in a large section devoted to victory celebrations across the United States.

The picture is often described as a sailor kissing a nurse, but the woman was later identified as dental assistant Greta Zimmer Friedman. A separate, visually similar photograph was taken by Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen. The two images are frequently confused because both captured spontaneous celebration in Times Square.
