Who swam breaststroke for the U.S. in Phelps's final Olympic medley relay?

The story behind the answer

Cody Miller swam breaststroke for the United States in Michael Phelps's final Olympic medley relay.

In the Rio 2016 men's 4×100 m medley relay final, Miller took the second leg, between backstroker Ryan Murphy and butterfly swimmer Phelps. His breaststroke split was 59.03 seconds. Nathan Adrian completed the quartet on freestyle, and the United States won in 3:27.95, setting an Olympic record.

Miller's place in the final can be confused with the American swimmers who competed in the heats. Kevin Cordes swam breaststroke in the preliminary round, while Miller was selected for the final. Because both swimmers contributed to the winning relay effort, official medal lists may mention both names, but Miller is the answer to the question about the final.

The race was Phelps's 23rd Olympic gold medal and his final Olympic appearance. Miller also won an individual bronze medal in the 100 m breaststroke at the same Games.
